My name is Astrid C. Case. I am beginning the M.Ed. in Educational Technology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I hold an M.S. in Instructional Design and I have 18 years of experience in instructional design and educational technology.

I want my design work to stay current with the tools and standards of this program and with the way I approach performance problems. I look for gaps in performance and for opportunities to improve learning and the business. I find where performance breaks and where instruction—or a non-instructional intervention—will close the gap.

Instructional design and technology in my professional environment
I use instructional systems design so instruction is sequenced, tied to well-written objectives, and aimed at a real need. That includes identifying the business need, then choosing an instructional intervention or a non-instructional intervention when the problem is not a skill or knowledge gap. Evaluation matters. Technology should support analysis, design, access, and interaction that fits the learner and the mission of the organization.
In real projects there is often not enough time or money to do every step the way a textbook describes. I still use the right instructional design steps. I adapt the method to the budget and the schedule. I keep the need, the objective, and the evaluation in the work. What I will do is design instruction that is interactive and worth the learner’s time.
In this M.Ed. I will test that approach against AECT standards and against the key assessments in EDTC 6320, 6321, 6323, 6325, and 6332.
I will revise this letter as the program proceeds.
